https://www.yubico.com/2014/07/yubikey-neo-updates/

So that was 4 months ago. Is this program going forward? I was disappointed that I can't hack on the apps on the NEO, especially since I found a limitation of the OpenPGP app (see https://github.com/Yubico/ykneo-openpgp/issues/20), and would like to see what can be done about it, but it's sort of pointless to have the source code when changes can't be tested.

Also, does this mean the set of apps on the NEO are as unchangeable as the firmware? What if there are updates to those apps?

I believe it was mentioned elsewhere on the forum that the way to currently join the developer program is by opening a support ticket with such a request.

Unfortunately there is a (non-yubico) NDA involved. :(

Hi,

yes, now you need to sign a NDA with NXP. I received the following answer from Yubico support after requesting a developer account:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Yubico Support.

Earlier this year, Yubico moved to locked down YubiKey NEOs to prevent attacks directed at the known transport key for the NXP chipset used by the YubiKey NEO. In order to obtain Developer NEOs, you must first contact NXP directly and sign an NDA with them. You will then be cleared to develop applets for their chipset, which Yubico can load onto YubiKey NEOs for a small production fee. If you need more specific information, you're requesting an NDA from NXP to develop for the JCOP 2.4.2 R1 OS.

Best Regards,
Yubico Support Team
After that I opened a support ticket at NXP to request a NDA under: http://www.nxp.com/my/services/technical-support-tickets?sort=subject, but I didn't get any answer until now (11 days now). I was hoping I could use some free time around Christmas, playing around with JavaCard applet development.

I understand that NXP wants to protect their intellectual property but I must admit admit that I am not totally happy about the "small production fee". Has anybody already any experience with this process? Or at least managed to get a NDA from NXP as a single person developer (not in the name of a company)?

This is just a hobby for me, so I don't want to sign an NDA.

If anyone wants to sell one of the older yubikey neos that has known management keys, I'd be happy to buy.

It's a shame that Yubico won't (or can't) make such devices generally available anymore.

Similiar situation for me. Altough I would even sign NXP's NDA I would prefer to have a YubiKey NEO where I can set my own card manager keys.

So, same question from me:
Does anybody own a YubiKey NEO which was a serial number lower than 3000000 (it's printed on the back side of the device) and is willing to sell it? I would also exchange it against a current (newly ordered one).

The process changed. You now 'raise' a support ticket, requesting to join the developer program:

https://www.yubico.com/support/raise-ticket/

Yubico will then follow up with more details.

No, unfortunately not.

I received this mail after registering for the dev program:

I tried to contact NXP for an NDA but I guess as a single-person developer they decided to ignore me. Also this still would not allow me to install applets on my own without Yubico's help on the Neo.

I bought instead a dual interface JavaCard smartcard and am currently using this instead of the Neo.
