Post subject:  [HOW-TO] - Bypass keyboard layout issue with static password

Requirements: YubiKey Personalization Tool

Hello everybody !
I've just bought a yubikey few days ago and unfortunately for me... I'm working on AZERTY keyboard (FR keyboard, moreover on Mac OS), so I have the "layout" issue.

I've found a workaround to type a chosen password without having to switch and switch back layout every time, I've looked the forum to check if it has already been proposed, didn't find so here is the workaround (really easy):

As far as I've understood how the yubikey works, without technical explanation, it types the password as if you typed on a US layout keyboard, that's why "AZERTY" is typed "QWERTY". The workaround is to type "QWERTY" on YOUR layout to to match "AZERTY" on US layout, so the "change layout" trick is valid, but instead of switching to US layout when you touch your yubikey (so switch/switch back multiple times a day), it's better to switch when typing password, so you can forget the US layout ! Here is what to do (in practise):

  1. Open the personalization tool to "Static password" tab > Advanced mode
  2. Switch to "US" layout
  3. When typing your password, don't look at the screen, just type the desired keys on the kb
  4. When done, you'll see a different output, don't worry.

Finally switch back to your physical keyboard layout and when you'll touch your yubikey, it will output your desired password as you typed it.
I hope it will be useful to others than me ;)

Cheers !
