Current configuration:

Host OS: Ubuntu 16.04
Guest OS: Ubuntu 16.04
Host is running VMware Workstation 12 (12.5.2) Pro

Yubikey 4 is easily recognized by the host os and I'm able to move PGP keys over to it.

I can't figure out how to get VMware to recognize the key and make it available to the guest OS though.

I've made these changes to the VMX file but it hasn't proven useful.

Code:
usb.generic.allowHID = "TRUE"
usb.generic.allowLastHID = "TRUE"

I've tried googling but haven't found anybody with a successful configuration the same as mine.

After doing some research to see how other unrecognized devices were handled in VMware Workstation I stumbled upon a solution. Adding the following line to the .vmx file fixed the issue:

Code:
usb.quirks.device0 = "0x1050:0x0407 allow"
