Resurrecting this topic - for Nexus 7 one does not need the USB connection, because it supports and can access Yubikey NEO via NFC. For Yubikeys other than NEO it may be necessary to involve USB cable. But I'm eager to try this on BLU R1 HD phone that does *not* have NFC capability - so USB cable would be the only way to use Yubikey with it. Stay tuned.
