Post subject: | Carrying the Yubikey |
I am a new user of a Yubikey and I like it very much. HOWEVER (you knew this was coming)... I have been wondering what the best way to avoid losing it is?! I have a Cruzer Titanium USB memory stick on my key ring. It's tough and I like the sliding USB connector very much. If I were to put my Yubikey on the same key ring it will not be possible to plug it in at the same time as the USB stick (it will also get very scuffed up on the USB pins); if I keep it loose in my wallet it might get lost. I am reluctant to wear it around my neck. There must be an alternative. Suggestions? As it happens, a USB stick (preferably like the Cruzer) with an extra button would be good -- that is to say, a combined USB stick + Yubikey. |

Here's what I use, a Belkin 4 port USB hub. The wire on the hub is just long enough, in conjunction with my USB drive, keyring, and YubiKey, to allow spanning between two USB ports on my laptop, and in the picture the hub has 3 unused ports. I need to use 2 ports on my laptop because my keyring is not long enough to plug both the YubiKey and the USB drive into the hub. |

Quote: (it will also get very scuffed up on the USB pins) I've been carrying a Yubikey around on my keyring for about 6 months now, and it is still in basically perfect condition. The only (very minor) scuffing on the USB pins is from where it's been pushed into a USB slot - just like you'd see on any USB device. The funny thing is that for the first 2-3 months of carrying it, I didn't use it at all. In fact, the entire purpose was to confirm that they were robust enough to survive on a keyring before I made any investment of time or money to actually start using them as an auth device. Over 6 months in (and over 3 months since rolling them out to others in the company) any concerns I've had are long gone... |
