As a happy owner of two yubikeys (one stored in a safe as a backup), I was wondering if there are any plans to offer an upgrade path for existing yubikey owners? Having already invested in my two existing yubikeys - which will eventually become obsolete, all things considered with U2F - it would be nice to be able to purchase a yubikey neo at a discounted price. Assuming the actual production cost of yubikeys is a tiny fraction of their selling price, it seems this could be done without really hurting the bottom-line.

What say you, Yubico?

That's a shame. Existing happy customers are the most important resource any company has - and goodwill towards the folks who helped the company reach its current success is fundamental to keeping those customers engaged and thrilled with remaining customers.

YubiKey NEO and NEO-n devices have shipped with firmware version 3.3 since Oct. 1, which includes U2F support along with other protocols including Yubico OTP and smart card functionality.

YubiKey NEOs are not upgradable based on best security practices. In fact, no YubiKey firmware can be upgraded since the device security is designed so nothing (including malware) can write to the firmware.

For more information see our blog YubiKey and BadUSB (https://www.yubico.com/2014/08/yubikey-badusb/)

Yes, I'm aware that the devices itself can't be upgraded. By 'upgrade path', I'm referring to the common practice of offering existing customers the option to purchase a new device at a discount, to reflect the previous investment the customer made in the product and the company.

+1

a coupon code would go a long way....

Although sounds like we may need to use another when U2F NFC is finalized....

I wait until devices compatible with U2F NFC will be released. I don't want to buy new NEO every year.

lack of forsight is on you guys.. u really expect us to pay $50 every 6months to get new features

im gonna end up with 4 neos by the time i get u2f support

frucking lame\

at least let us send u our old neo to get updated one back

With regards to the YubiKey NEO and DFU…
– The YubiKey NEO technically does support DFU, but requires the new firmware image to be signed by us. Yubico does not endorse nor support use of DFU for users.

It is like talking to a tree. It is amazing that they don't even want to respond to a reasonable request (i.e. discount or swap out keys with 3.3 firmware) from the early adopters like us who supported them in the first place!

@aselvan No! Tree rustles in response!
