Post subject:  PIV vs PGP

I just received my first Yubikey (Yubikey 4). I'm using it for second factor auth, and playing around with the OTP API. I'm trying to understand some of the other features that the key provides.

The one thing that really interests me is the ability to use the card with RSA keys (especially for decryption and SSH). The keys appear to support something call PIV and PGP. But I'm not sure how these two features differ. Are they competing standards, or are they related?

What are the similarities / differences between PIV and PGP? Do Yubikey devices support both? Are they independent, or are the Slots / PINs / PUKs / etc... shared between the two standards or are they independent? (importantly, if you reset one, does it reset the other).

Does anyone have links to resources about this?

Cheers,
Ian

They are two different specs, and they are two autonomous applets on the YubiKey 4/NEO - so changing the PIN on the PIV applet doesn't change the PIN on the OpenPGP applet, etc.

I just found this thread and though I would share my own, which was similar. I think the keys use a great system but it is a bit confusing for new users. I am still trying to figure out the specific differences between PIV and OpenPGP. They are apparently different systems with very similar design and functionality.

Here is my thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2585

Here are some quick definitions:

Hope this is useful. :D
