I just received a new yubikey v 4.
I inserted it while the personalisation tool (latest version) was launched.
I get "unknown error" and no info on the key is displayed (no version, firmware etc...)

What can I do to program this key? Is it DOA? :(

please visit https://demo.yubico.com/

tocuh the YubiKey and test the OTP. If it works, you have an outdate version of the Yubico personalization tool

Get a new version from developers.yubico.com

It was actually an OS X permissions issue, running as sudo solved it:

sudo /Applications/YubiKey\ Personalization\ Tool.app/Contents/MacOS/YubiKey\ Personalization\ Tool

So why is running as sudo an appropriate solution? A reasonable response to software is to be able to run it without needing to go to the command line, so why does this seem to be a requirement for some people?

Also, that solution does not always work.

Code:
$ sudo /Applications/YubiKey\ Personalization\ Tool.app/Contents/MacOS/YubiKey\ Personalization\ Tool
$ sudo bash
bash-3.2# /Applications/YubiKey\ Personalization\ Tool.app/Contents/MacOS/YubiKey\ Personalization\ Tool
Illegal instruction: 4

I am running into this same error now on my OS 10.14 MacBook Pro. Previously I have had no problems reprogramming Yubikeys but this is my first time doing so on the new OS. Running as sudo gives the Illegal Instruction: 4 error.

The keys I've tried all work fine when plugged directly into the laptop, it's just the personalization tool that is erring out. I did, of course, uninstall the Tool and reinstall the latest version, just to be sure.

Any suggestions if sudo isn't working (as noted above)
