It did not work until I installed a User Agent Changer, and told my Firefox to pretend that it is Chrome. :)

After I change the User Agent string however, authentication succeeded without any further ado.

I just checked the long-running bugzilla thread on U2F and noticed there's a recent reference to a new github/addons.mozilla.org U2F support add-on for firefox that was recently published!

Granted, version 0.0.6, but might be interesting to check out...
