Make sure you have the newest version of the Personalization Tool (If you haven't already added the Yubico PPA, I would recommend going that route)

If you're still seeing Unknown Firmware, run the following command in Terminal and restart:

sudo sh -c 'wget -q -O - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Yubic ... -ccid-udev | python'
Statistics: Posted by ChrisHalos — Tue Jan 19, 2016 9:01 pm

I've compiled the latest personalisation tool for linux (as of 19.01.16, v.31.24) and as far as I'm concerned this is now working with Ubuntu 15.04. If this is now because of the new software release (x.24), or the additional "allowLastHID" I don't know.

Update: I re-did the test with v.3.1.21(older) and get the same behavior, letting me believe the second setting "allowLastHID" did the trick.

I still get a small hick-up where it states "Unkown firmware" in red above the image, even though under "Firmware Version" it correctly states 4.2.7. The rest does seam to work. I haven't tried to reprogram a slot.
Statistics: Posted by cruiser — Tue Jan 19, 2016 7:53 pm

I wonder if your Yubikey is provisioned. Something like

Code:

yubico-piv-tool -k -a verify-pin -a set-chuid -a set-ccc

Probably done on a "real" machine rather than on a VM.

Or is your intention to be able to provision the device on a VM? (I've no idea if it can work.)
Statistics: Posted by Uriel — Mon Jan 11, 2016 11:51 pm

Yes, that is my intent later. But initially I just want it to be recognized. I would assume that Yubikey personalization tool does not need opensc to detect the key?

(update:) I've tried it with a more current Ubuntu version 15.04 and it seams to work. Opensc etc. works, personalization tool still does not. Stating "Unkown error occured". This looks like a bug. I'll try get around to post it on github.
Statistics: Posted by cruiser — Mon Dec 21, 2015 3:44 pm

Assuming you want to use the PIV applet, I'd recommend getting the latest OpenSC from Github, rather than relying on the version packaged with Ubuntu.

This advice might help with other Yubikey applets too.
Statistics: Posted by mouse008 — Sun Dec 20, 2015 9:23 pm

I've set the usb.generic.allowHID = "TRUE" option in my .vmx file.

This works for older yubikeys, but not with the new yubikey 4. It's neither detected by opensc or the personalization tool. It does although show up in lsusb. I've downloaded the latest personalisation tool and compiled it, but had no success.

Any Ideas?

Versions:
Ubuntu 14.04
OpenSC 13.0
Yubikey 4, v4.2.7
VMware Workstation 11.1.3
Personalisation tool v3.1.14/23
Statistics: Posted by cruiser — Sat Dec 19, 2015 8:27 pm
