Thank you so much for that post. My little Asus T100T Win 8.1 machine worked perfectly with my yubikey Neo until last weekend when I did a Windows update, and then it started being recognized as a MS smart card reader and it would not function at all - although it worked on all my other machines (Windows and android). Turning off power management did the trick. Thank you again!
Statistics: Posted by seo68 — Sat Apr 25, 2015 4:04 am

More updates:

Problem persists in Windows 10 and with a newer Intel chipset (Intel 5 series). Exactly the same symptoms as previously described; can be fixed by using Windows 8.0 versions usbhub.sys & usbport.sys.

New workarounds:

You can get the NEO to produce OTPs by plugging another USB device in first (eg, USB thumb drive; mouse, etc) to the laptop.

Turning off the power saving features on the USB ports seems to resolve the issue also (eg, under Device Manager, uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in both Generic USB Hubs and USB Root Hubs)

This suggests to me that power management is the issue... because the ports are powered down before any devices connected, the NEO isn't recognised correctly when first plugged in. Having something else plugged in already or disabling the power management resolves. It's likely the Windows 8.0 drivers don't have the same power management as the newer versions.

I'll update if I find anything else. I don't know if the newer FIDO versions have this issue as I don't have one to test.
Statistics: Posted by charliee — Tue Jan 27, 2015 5:42 am

Hi guys, an update for you all!

So I got sick of waiting for a solution from either Yubico or Microsoft, so I decided to look into the issue in earnest myself. I found a number of other devices with similar issues moving from Windows 8 to 8.1 - external USB 3.0 HDDs and some mobile phones were the most common. I came across a dodgy workaround here, which has now restored my Yubikey NEO functionality on my laptop:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2598155

Essentially this replaces the base USB port drivers (usbport.sys and usbhub.sys) with Windows 8.0 versions instead of the 8.1 versions. It's pretty dodgy, but it does work. The workaround no longer applies for the mobile phones thanks to MS KB2917929 but it does work for the Yubikey NEO.

Obviously modifying the default Windows drivers could have some unforeseen issues, but I haven't had any so far. YMMV.

TL,DR: replace usbport.sys and usbhub.sys with Windows 8.0 versions to restore NEO functionality in 8.1.
Statistics: Posted by charliee — Thu Mar 27, 2014 1:57 am

To respond to Tim's question of details of the computer I'm having the trouble with: It's a HP EliteBook 2740p (Intel QM57 chipset). USB ports appear to be Intel 5 Series / 3400 chipset. I used Intel's INF update utility, so it's either using them or the built in Windows 8.1 ones. I'm not aware of any later USB drivers (none listed on HP's site anyway).

[I apologize for the delay in my response, ironically I was unable to reply because to login to this forum it requires your Yubikey to be present, and since it wasn't working on this computer I couldn't easily login to reply]
Statistics: Posted by AlanI — Thu Feb 20, 2014 1:04 pm

I've got the exact same problem.

I've got three Windows 8.1 computers, it works fine on two of them, but refuses to work on the third.

Device manager shows it as 'Microsoft USBccid Smartcard Reader' and 'The device cannot start.'

When I plug it into the problem computer, the green light on the Neo turns solid green (i.e. indicating it's working and ready to generate codes), however when you press the button the green light immediately turns of completely without sending anything to the computer (well, any text anyway).

The light remains off until you unplug it from the computer, and plug it back in again at which point the entire process repeats itself.

I've tried removing all USB bus drivers and rebooting as suggested, but it's still doing the same thing.

When you plug it in for the first time without drivers, the Windows 'installing new device' window pops up and identifies it as 'Yubikey NEO CCID'.

I tried changing mode to 82, and it sorta worked? I changed to 82 on another computer, booted up the problematic computer and plugged in the key. This time, two 'installing new device' windows came up, one talking about a Yubikey keyboard, and the other about a Yubikey smartcard (I think, I'm going from memory as they were only on the screen for a second). Once that completed, it actually worked. I was able to press the button and it spit out the code as expected.

HOWEVER, just to test it was completely working, I turned the computer off and back on again, and tried it again -- and it went back into broken. The 'Installing new device' went back to 'Yubikey NEO CCID' and didn't configure itself correctly. I've not been able to recreate my short-lived success again.

So, long story short, I have no idea what's going on. Any ideas?

Side note: What's the default mode for the Neo? Should I change it back to whatever it was before I changed it to 82?

EDIT: Also, no virtualisation software here either.
Statistics: Posted by AlanI — Thu Feb 13, 2014 2:05 pm

Charliee - I have exactly the same problem. Dell Studio XPS 1640, with Windows 8.1. My Yubikey Neo worked without any problem under Windows 8, but it's totally stuffed on 8.1. I've tried all the recommendations on this thread and no joy.

The answer seems to be the -m82 switch, and this is where my problems begin.

I understand I have to change the mode so that both HID+CCID are active. I know how to burn and run a Live Linux CD, but after that I am completely and utterly lost. Can anyone direct me to the simplest walkthrough possible of how to run these tools within a Linux environment? Words, pictures (big ones) and video would be useful.

I know about ykneo-ccid-tools and ykneo-ccid-modeswitch but have no idea what to do with them. Does anyone have a Windows version? I could live with a command line version, but feel much more comfortable with GUI.

As it stands I have a Neo and two Standards that I can't use.
Statistics: Posted by Fin — Tue Oct 22, 2013 12:48 pm
