Ignore step 6, that's only if step 5 doesn't result in the proper response:

Stored initial challenge and expected response in ‘/Users/[USERNAME]/.yubico/challenge-[YUBIKEY SERIAL NUMBER]’.

If there's a permissions issue and you have to run sudo ykpamcfg -2, then you'll get the message:

Stored initial challenge and expected response in '/var/root/[USERNAME]/challenge-[YUBIKEY SERIAL NUMBER]'.

The file has to be in /Users/[USERNAME]/.yubico/, that's what the command in step 6 is for.

So I have followed the instructions closely from the OS X login guide.

But I get to one area that fails at the end.

sudo cp /var/root/.yubico/challenge-[YUBIKEY SERIAL NUMBER] /Users/[USERNAME]/.yubico

I'm not doing any of the configuration from a root account.

root isn''t even enabled on the system. (does it need to be?) Do all commands need to be performed from a root login?

Appreciate any insight.
