Despite the issues above, someone has gone ahead and attempted to implement an "open source JavaCard applet implementing a Bitcoin hardware wallet with partial BIP32 support", with the YubiKey Neo as the intended host:

It is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3.

I have not evaluated it, but I think it is worth noting here, as it seems to demonstrate a significant desire to achieve Bitcoin hardware wallet support within the YubiKey platform, using free software.

This was an applet for the old NEOs which had the ability to load applets (i.e. "known" card manager keys). We haven't sold these NEOs since July 2014 and the YubiKey 4 will never have this ability.

Any change in status on this now that YK4 seems to support SHA512? I see the python repo says the project is abandon, but the java repo has no such note.

Yeah, that is OpenSC lying. There is no way for it to know if the underlying hardware supports SHA512.

Feel free to look at the datasheet for the secure element in the Yubikey Neo. It can only do up to SHA-256 in hardware.

Hello,

Despite the confusing man explanation, i believe that is what the module supports not the token. It means that you PC will do it, not the device.

I executed "pkcs11-tool -M" on Linux and "SHA512, digest" was part of the result.

I saw the the firmware 3.4.3 already supports SHA512. Any news about that?

Hello,

Currently our hardware does not support SHA512 therefore we will not release the applet because it would be unusable as the software implementation is too slow.
