The Yubikey is a low-speed USB periperhal, i.e. communication is at 1.5 Mbit/s.

For HID devices with a report size of just 8 bytes (like a keyboard), beefing up the speed does not make sense. The nice thing with USB low speed is the relaxed timing requirements that allows use of a low-frequency, an all-silicon oscillator circuit.
