The upside down issue for me is about scratching the metal since the other side typically has metal pieces for the outer tracks. You will scratch (more than usual) the tracks whenever you insert the Yubikey in upsidedown.
Statistics: Posted by steffi — Mon Aug 25, 2008 4:51 pm

What if you keep the connection on only one side but put the Button on both side?
Then you would not have any shortage issue, and it would work from both side for everybody?
Statistics: Posted by patgadget — Sun Jun 22, 2008 8:59 pm

An idea is to do a "deluxe"-package. When I bought a Corsair Flash Voyager GT Memory Stick I recieved not only the stick but also an extension cord and a key strap. Perhaps you could sell a package with a key cord and an extension cord branded with Yubico in the future - for cases where direct connection to the computer isn't an option.
Statistics: Posted by VoxPelli — Sun Jun 22, 2008 4:17 pm

Based on discussion so far, I think it is safe to assume that we are going to keep the physical design as-is for now.

/Simon
Statistics: Posted by Simon — Mon Jun 09, 2008 8:49 am

Have been testing my Yubikey on several platforms and hardware (Mac, VAIO, Dell) and have not encountered any issues yet. My vote is to keep its current physical size and configuration.
Statistics: Posted by LyndyB — Fri Jun 06, 2008 10:13 pm

I have a Dell 2405FPW and the button is also facing backwards. However, the screen is big and it is uncomfortable to reach the usb connections anyway. So an extension cord works fine.

/Simon
Statistics: Posted by Simon — Mon Jun 02, 2008 8:39 am

Thanks for the observation.

Anyone experienced a situation where the key is upside down ? Good to know for us...

The biggest *sigh* I've experienced so far is the new Mac keyboard with built-in hub - the button on the key disappears under it

Jakob E
Firmware and Hardware guy @ Yubico
Statistics: Posted by Jakob — Thu May 29, 2008 8:49 pm

It's an old (3 / 4 years) dell. It takes a usb lead from the main pc and has two ports on the left side of the screen. It just makes it a bit more convenient than bending down and rummaging under the desk.

It is no big deal. You don't really need to see the button. I just grab hold of the key with a thumb on the front and first finger on the back (button) and it seems to work ok.
Statistics: Posted by metamind — Thu May 29, 2008 7:57 pm

I've seen quite a few USB devices having it implemented that way, but I don't feel that comfortable with that approach since the backing side of the receptacle is made of metal and can therefore short the "other side".

There are ways to get around it, but as the button is on one side, that side must face up anyway.

Today we only apply hardened gold on one side of the board and I beleive it will increase the price to mask off the gold on the other side where we don't want it.

We'll keep it in mind, though. Thanks for the comment.

Jakob E
Hardware guy @ Yubico
Statistics: Posted by Jakob — Wed May 28, 2008 7:23 pm
