Custom password - up to 38 characters ASCII256 (Scan Code mode in the Personalization Tool)
modhex password - up to 64 characters modhex only (Advanced mode in the Personalization Tool), although you can also select the strong password policy option to add an exclamation point, 4, and capital letter (to meet password complexity requirements for most systems)

If the password is less than 39 characters, it's easy as you can enter it as a custom password in scan code mode. If it's more than 38 characters, you need to have the settings that were used to program the original password, otherwise this is not possible. You would need to program a new password (and make sure you save the settings for future use).
Statistics: Posted by ChrisHalos — Tue Oct 18, 2016 4:01 pm

I've got an early version(2.0.1) of the Yubikey where I have a 48 character static password.

I want to configure my other keys with the same static password.

These keys have firmware versions 3.1.2, 2.3.3 and 3.4.9.

The Yubikey Personalization Tool says the limit is Max 38 chars for 2.2+ and 16 chars for 2.0 and 2.1.
This limitation is enforced by a generic error message about the key might be protected.(It's not any shorter password is successfully written to the key).

This limit is also for the key already holding the 48 char password!?

What kind of limitation have I reached?
How come I have an older key with a longer password?

Is there any way to get the longer password onto the other keys?
Statistics: Posted by peterde — Tue Oct 18, 2016 7:51 am
